Fortem Chorus is a choir for young people aged from 8 to 14. We believe that the cornerstone of a quality music education is singing with others. We sing a range of diverse choral repertoire, from pop to classical and aim to teach our singers a variety of music traditions and styles.
Oh, and ‘Fortem’ is Latin for ‘brave’.
Who is the conductor?
Emily Irvine, Conductor & Director
Emily Irvine is a music educator and choral conductor. In 2014 she founded Inner West Voices, a community choir for adults in Sydney, who have since performed with some of Australia’s great music artists including Christine Anu and Dr G. Yunupingu. Also appearing on television and stage, Inner West Voices have created a name for themselves as a vibrant and impressive Australian vocal group.
Since graduating with a B Mus/B Ed from UNSW Emily has worked as a conductor of young musicians through string ensembles, choirs, and student orchestras for over a decade. She conducted The Arts Unit (NSW Department of Education) State Choir in 2016 and was the Boys Chorus Master of Sydney Chamber Opera’s 2013 production of Owen Wingrave. Emily also composes music for theatre and television.
Emily is passionate about the value of choral music and believes in its powerful effect on young people. As well as being the Artistic Director of Inner West Voices, she has founded Fortem Chorus for young people across Sydney who love to sing to come together. Fortem’s mission includes programming music from a wide range of musical traditions and styles, with a focus on giving its young singers the opportunity to sing music from Australia’s diverse compositional output. Emily is currently based in Sydney, Australia.
