Sonant Traces is an immersive, participatory and site-responsive music activation of White Bay Power Station – a unique music performance and listening experience composed for singers, cellos and double basses, by local composers/artists Oliver Cameron and Elizabeth Jigalin. Conceptualised as a dynamic interplay between a roaming choir and resonant, rumbling lower strings, it aims to evoke echoes of the past and harbour locale while encouraging active participation from the community.

As part of the project, local community choir Inner West Voices will contribute to a shimmering, “sonant” soundscape through simple prompts. Through these instructions, participants will engage with the space through sound. This choral element of the project directly engages with the Inner West’s vibrant community of amateur singers and fosters a shared experience of musical exploration for the public.

The voices’ resonance will be supported by an amplified string ensemble featuring some of Australia’s finest double bassists and cellists. This collective ensemble will present two original compositions we will each compose, “tracing” through sound the site’s history.
